Topell Energy, a leading provider of innovative torrefaction solutions, has successfully provided a 2300 tonnes sample of torrefied pellets from their plant in Duiven, the Netherlands, to test co-firing performance at traditional coal power plants and the results are reported to be excellent (source: www.topellenergy.com , press release, 4 February 2014).

After more than 25 years and over 150 plants installed, we have demonstrated our ability to provide unique products, competitive advantages, reduced costs, energy savings and many other valuable benefits for our customers.

The system shown was installed and commissioned by Polow Energy Systems in Holland in 2008 to provide bulk samples of torrefied product. Our torrefied product is hydrophobic and is readily milled prior to being fed to PF burners. The CV of our torrefied wood is ~18MJ/kg. The first 60,000 t/y plant is currently in manufacture for commissioning in early 2010.

Ecoycle is currently developing the first two UK sites, with planning permission in place, and is looking to develop further sites; the technology provides more economic solutions for medium scale RDF operations, allowing clean efficient utilisation of these fuels without the need to build large scale incineration plant with the associated emissions and logistical problems.
