Tecnar develops, manufactures and markets advanced sensors for industrial process monitoring and control. Founded in 1989 as a spin-off from Canada’s National Research Council, the company has since diversified into four divisions focused around automated pressure pipe welding, thermal spraying sensors, non-contact laser ultrasonics sensors and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) sensors.

Dr. Marc Choquet cumulates more than 20 years of experience in non-destructive evaluation. He obtained his Ph.D from École Polytechnique of Montreal in 1990 for his work on photo-acoustics and subsequently spent 8 years at Canada’s National Research Council as a Research Officer working on laser-ultrasonics applied to non-destructive, non-contact inspection. During that period, he managed important projects, the largest being the development & implementation of an online laser-ultrasonics thickness gauge on a seamless pipe mill (The Timken company, Canton, OH, USA).

The GALVALIBS gives readout of the density of particles in suspension in the pot. This is revolutionary information that can easily be used to guaranty the quality of the coating in terms of dross effects at the surface. In situ industrial results have shown the dross readout is sensitive to line speed and pot temperature.

Around the mid 80’s, the thermal spray community recognized that in order to bring thermal spray processes to the next level, there was a need for sensors able to provide real-time, in-flight particles information just before impingement on the part. Various researchers around the world started to develop such sensors.
