There is no question that today there are more organized sports than ever before. There are more leagues to play in and a higher percentage of parents driving their kids to practice and games than ever before. As a result there is less time for parents to be at home building an ice hockey rink. A while ago there was a crisis in Canadian hockey and the thinking was that we weren’t winning gold medals because kids are playing too much organized hockey and not enough playing around for fun at early ages. In a typical league game the average kid may handle the puck for a total of 1 minute the whole game. If you put a handful of kids on a backyard rink they can stick handle and shoot for hours. Many are saying that in general European players have more imagination because they spend less time playing organized hockey at the youngest ages and more time building their skills and having fun. We’ve all heard about NHL players that grew up playing on a pond or in their backyard until after dark, with mom having to drag him in. If your kids love to play then having their own rink gives them access as much as they want.

Synthetic outdoor hockey rinks have had many producers over the years and it has been commercially and publicly available and used since the early Sixties. For many years though it was an unmanageable product because of the styles in which it was produced. Butt or Spline jointing was common practice but this method had issues with expansion and contraction. When this happened it would cause the product to separate which would result in open gaps in the main skating surface. This was a major cause for safety concerns for skaters as hitting a gap could cause falls and injuries. Rinks were forced to shut down because the areas had to be re-aligned. Trying to repair an outdoor hockey rink was no easy task simply because of the weight of the product. The older version of materials that were used were also of different grades of Polyethylenes that did not wear well. They often also required Silicone additives to be added to the surface to increase the glide factor. While this did increase the motion, it would tend to build up and become dirty from air born dust particles leaving behind a greasy and hard to clean to surface which to say the least was not very good for your equipment.

Jason Ward made a surprise visit with Wayman Harten owner of Synthetic Ice Solutions of Canada today, having skated on our product in the past many times, Jason was excited to tour the new 7500 sq. ft production facility in Brampton, stating that he was not surprised at the Growth & success of the Company, based on the fact of the quality of the product, and how simple it makes it for people to have a custom training facility set up in their own homes with in the matter of days, reducing the need for travel to outside rinks and of course the ever increasing costs associated with using such facilities.
