Faced with a rapidly growing array of environmental threats in Canada and impressed with the effectiveness of litigation as a means of environmental protection, conservationists foresaw the need for an organization with a mandate to provide free legal services to environmental groups and concerned citizens. Thus, in December of 1990, Sierra Legal Defence Fund was launched.It is now more than a decade since Sierra Legal first opened its doors. From an original staff of two in Vancouver, Sierra Legal has grown into a national organization of more than 40 lawyers, scientists and support staff at our offices in Vancouver and Toronto. Sierra Legal is a non-profit, charitable organization funded by public donations and foundations grants and currently has over 30,000 individual supporters across Canada.As Canada's pre-eminent advocate for the environment, Sierra Legal is now a cornerstone in the strategic plans of campaign groups throughout the country. Our lawyers and scientists represent not only environmentalists, but also labour groups, First Nations and citizens' organizations.
