Description
1857 — Brereton Bunting bought out the general store of Hugh Brown. He ran the store for about thirty years, then was succeeded by his son R. A. Bunting. 1883 — The store at the north-west corner of Church Street and Kingston Road was built by J. R. Brownridge. Brownridge sold the following year to W. T. Dunbar, who ran the business till 1904, when he retired. 1883 — Spinks Mill put in new machinery and increased production up to 200 barrels of flour a day that could be shipped out by rail. Mid 1880s — Pickering Village businesses included two coopers, a weaver, a druggist, a watchmaker, a newspaper (The Pickering News), a livery stable and two hotels.
