By the 1920s this dominance had ended since improvements in the roads connecting cities in North America demanded that cars had a better range and the discovery of large reserves of oil in the US made gasoline inexpensive and widely available. Combined with the fact that gasoline cars were half the price of electric cars quickly relegated electric vehicles to specialty uses such as electric forklifts and golf carts. While major car manufactures tinkered with electric vehicles starting in the '50s nothing much came of it until recently.
