Two hundred years ago, the first settlers landed in a vast forest with just an ax, a cross-cut saw, a plow, some wheat and maize seeds, a cow, and two horses. On the Canadian side of Lake Ontario, there was nothing but a dilapidated route known as The Street (today known as the Dundas highway). Each site was surveyed on a grid of 100-acre sections after being purchased from the Mississauga Indians through a treaty. The inhabitants of Trafalgar Township were known as the United Empire Loyalists after the War of 1812 with the United States. Among the names on gravestones at the modest cemetery close to Munn's Church are Biggar, Featherstone, Fish, Bowbeer, and Post. Numerous of their descendants are still alive today.

At Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, Sybil Salvin Rampen has served as managing director for many years. She had many opportunity as a child growing up in this area to read stories about Loyalists, which sparked a passion for collecting in her.
