Intact is the largest provider of home, auto and business insurance in Canada with more than $4 billion in direct premiums written. Approximately 80% of our products are distributed through a nation-wide network of insurance brokers, while the rest are sold directly to consumers through call centres and the Internet. Our 7,000 employees offer our products and services through the Intact Insurance, belairdirect, Grey Power and Novex Group Insurance brands. In 2009 we became a widely-held Canadian company and changed our name from ING Canada to Intact Financial Corporation. We trace our roots in Canada back 200 years to the incorporation of the Halifax Fire Insurance Association - later to become the Halifax Insurance Company - in 1809, making it one of the country's oldest, continuous companies. The stage was now set for the eventual creation of Intact Financial Corporation, the largest P&C insurer in Canada. The post-war years marked an important period for us, as tens of thousands of Europeans "“ war brides, displaced persons, people looking for a better life "“ immigrated to Canada. They included large numbers of Dutch, many of whom fondly remembered Canada's role in the liberation of their nation. In the late 1950s, they were followed by Nationale-Nederlander, then one of the largest insurance companies in their former homeland. In order to serve them in their new country, Nationale-Nederlander acquired the Halifax Insurance Company. Growing Across Canada In the late 1970's we continued to grow with the acquisition of three well known regional insurers - Commerce Group and Belair in Quebec, and Western Union in Alberta. In 1991, Nationale-Nederlander merged with NMB Postbank to create ING Group, one of the first bank assurance groups in the world. As our business in Canada continued to grow, our insurance companies that had been operating as separated entities were brought together in 1993 under the umbrella of ING Canada. Our growth continued with the acquisition of Guardian Insurance's business in Canada in 1998, followed by the acquisition of Zurich Canada's home, auto and small and medium business insurance portfolio in 2001. Halifax Insurance Company, Commerce Group and Western Union were later merged to become ING Insurance. Belair would become the first company in North America to offer insurance products online under the name belairdirect. 2004 was another milestone year for us with the acquisition of Allianz Canada. That was soon followed with an Initial Public Offering and the start of trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange with ING Group retaining 70% ownership. 2009 marked the beginning of an historic new era for us, with the acquisition of ING's shares by large institutional investors, creating Intact Financial Corporation, a proudly Canadian company.
