The choir officially formed their own organization in 1975. Currently under the music direction of John Packer and with accompanist Laura Pin, our singers are comprised of 35 men and women who reside in the Hamilton and Halton communities. The singers are of all ages and backgrounds, and share one important link -- an innate love of music. The Harlequins are proud to be one of the few choirs in the area specializing in popular music. Our vast repertoire is drawn from Broadway musicals, award winning films, the big band era, jazz, contemporary, folk and pop charts. Our unique choral sound can be compared to the smooth, mellow music of some pop groups or the energetic, passionate sound of unique choruses from great Broadway shows past and present such as Les Miserables, Evita, Carousel, Phantom of the Opera, Kismet, Oklahoma, West Side Story or Miss Saigon. Gershwin, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rogers and Hammerstein, Bernstein, Sondheim, Rogers and Hart, and popular composers Ellington, Arlen, Williams, Mercer, Abba, Porter, Joel, Strayhorn, and Lennon and McCartney are all contributors to the music library. Each season the Harlequin Singers present two main concerts that attract over 600 music lovers from the surrounding communities. Our music and cabaret style seating provides great appeal and ambience for the over-30 crowd. Each year our concerts continue to attract larger audiences. Community outreach is an important part of who the Harlequins are. Over the years we have sung for numerous area nursing and retirement homes, service club, church and charitable fundraisers events. The Harlequins love to sing and have a great time whenever and wherever they entertain. The Harlequins have been the featured guest choir of a number of Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra concerts, and have performed at Hamilton Place as a prelude to the Hamilton Philharmonic's Saturday night Pops concerts. We have performed for numerous charitable causes such as the Out of the Cold program, A Christmas Carol reading for St. Matthew's House, Soupfest (a project of Living Ministries), Hamilton YWCA, the ALS Society, the CNIB, and the Hamilton Spectator Summer Camp Fund.
