Description
The history of Victoria's Harbour is inextricably linked with the growth and development of the city and the surrounding communities. With Captain James Cook's arrival in the spring of 1778, came the fur trade and the gradual and permanent settlement of Europeans in the area. In addition to the "rugged yet pristine wilderness" of southern Vancouver Island, Captain Cook also encountered many aboriginal families, speaking different dialects of the North Straits Salish (Lekwungaynung) language. An eventual amalgamation of several families led to members of the three dialect groups becoming collectively known as the Songhees, the Saanich and the Sooke.
