Humber Nurseries Limited was established in 1948, by Frans and Sibylla Peters after they emigrated from Holland shortly after World War II. As a graduate of the Dutch Agricultural College, Mr. Peters' talents were best used in the development of a nursery. A site was selected in the Mount Dennis-Weston area of Toronto. It was due to this location's closeness to the Humber Flats and the banks of the Humber River that the name Humber Nurseries was born. The original nursery quickly evolved into a multi-faceted business of landscaping, lawn maintenance, retail centre and some propagation.In 1952 a 100 acre farm was purchased in beautiful Caledon East for the production of a complete line of nursery stock. Tragedy struck in 1954 in the form of Hurricane Hazel. The damage was so severe that serious consideration was given to the moving back to Holland. Mr. And Mrs. Peters' persevered and through shear determination and hard work Humber Nurseries continued. In 1959 it became apparent that the business had out-grown the location and the current 21 acres was purchased. Disaster ravaged Humber Nurseries again in 1973 in the form of a fire. The entire main barn was destroyed and all the equipment with it. The Peters' family, which included sons Frans and Guy and daughters Sibylla and Astrid set out to rebuild their nursery once again.
