"” Robert Werner, P.Eng., Founder, BC Digital Divide "This past Saturday the GVHBA Renovation Council launched its Ramps Program, the free construction of sturdy wheelchair ramps for low-income homeowners living with mobility challenges. Despite being extremely busy on their own projects across the Lower Mainland, 12 GVHBA members volunteered their time to construct a new ramp for a mother and daughter at their 1940s home in Burnaby. The old, rotting ramp could no longer safely support a heavy motorized wheelchair and needed to be replaced. The mother, 85, is bedridden but ventures outside to enjoy her garden when she is feeling up to it. The daughter, 62, suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, is on a disability pension, and often needs a wheelchair for mobility. For their generosity, construction skills and community spirit, thanks are extended to Joe Heilman, JHC Craftsmen; John Friswell, CCI Renovations; John Juzyniec and Leo Noort, Solution Renovations; Martin McKeown, Birch Creek Home Renovations; Stacey Reeves, Right Hand Man; Matthew Vagg, Cypress Fine Homes; Ralph Belisle, TQ Construction; Jeff Bain, JKB Construction; and John Quinton, Quinton Construction. Kent Houston and two helpers from Houston Landscapes placed plants around the ramp. Thomas Goodall of Fresh Start Recycling & Disposal disposed of the old ramp.
