In The News June 2009: Organic Spa Review February 2009: The Sunday Times (London UK) has named Mountain Trek (now FitPath) as one of their 20 best spas in the world. We're recognized as one of only 5 Boot Camps in the list, and the only Canadian Spa. Download Article (4Mb pdf) The Times Online also covers us in a brief piece Five Boot-Camp Spas Detox is an important element of the FitPath program. We incorporate time tested gentle detoxification practices that enhance the body's elimination systems. The skin for example, is our largest eliminatory organ. Sweating while exercising and through the recommended use of the sauna naturally supports the release of toxic salts from our bodies. Drinking water not only re-hydrates us, it also continues to flush out toxins. Hydrotherapy and lymphatic drainage through massage and yoga are beneficial, and our spa cuisine with its focus on unprocessed and organic food naturally supports the body's cleansing systems. But why detox in the first place, and what are toxins? Nutrition Expert Elson Haas defines a toxin as "any substance that creates irritating and/or harmful effects in the body, undermining our health or stressing our biochemical or organ functions." Our bodies produce toxins every day through normal functions. All biochemical, cellular and bodily activities generate substances that need to be eliminated. The act of breathing creates toxic residue. Negative emotions and thoughts are also believed to be damaging to our bodies and "toxic" in nature. Toxicity in our environment is a concern that we contend with daily. The quality of the air and the water we drink are held suspect. We ingest a continuous supply of food additives and preservatives that may or may not be good for us. We take new and stronger drugs, and eat an excess amount of sugar and highly refined foods as well as stimulants. All of these contribute to a toxic load on the body. Studies have shown weight gain or an inability to lose weight can be influenced by our toxic load. Since we store toxins in our fat cells it stands to reason the more toxins we have the more fat we need to store them in. The liver is our detoxifying organ; it performs more than 500 functions for the body. When overburdened with demands such as overeating, poor food choices, drinking or anger issues, the liver can become congested and therefore will not be as efficient in emulsifying fats and eliminating toxins. This can slow down our metabolism, contributing to weight problems. When our metabolism is slow, calorie consumption by the body decreases and excess dietary calories are converted into fat. That's why some people feel they don't eat a lot and still find it hard to lose weight. Eating more unprocessed, natural foods with an emphasis on vegetables will naturally detox the body and make is easier to lose unwanted fat. Elimination of foods such as all flour products, sugar, alcohol and caffeine will add additional benefits. By changing the foods that you eat, ultimately you will be healthier and feel better physically and mentally. Energy will increase, and you'll be happier and more positive about yourself and about your life.
