Description

When I finished my post secondary eduction in 1995, I came back home and started Cree-Tech Inc. The company specializes in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and we provide services to the mining, forestry and First Nation sectors. My formal education is in the field of GIS. I built an office in my basement where I employed up to 9 people doing various GIS and forestry contracts for a variety of companies, municipalities, First Nations and Tribal Councils. We’ve even had offices in Sioux Lookout and in Sault Ste. Marie.

I started my company immediately after my post secondary education. At the age of 22 I built my own home where I continue to live today. I believe the band should be operated like a business, we provide services to our customers which is the membership. A true leader does three things, they say what they are going to do, follow through what they said they were going to do and they pay their bills.

The TLE is probably the most important negotiations our First Nation will ever be involved in. The outcome will most likely be in the form of cash and land. The membership must be allowed to provide input. I truly believe that we must do more than provide updates to our membership at large. I believe we need to involve the membership during every step of the way and we can do this with a more thorough communication strategy with the membership. Members must be able to provide input into the process and what possible outcomes they want to see out of the negotiations.

What are your views around Economic Development? I believe economic development can be developed in various forms. We can establish Impact Benefit Agreements with developing industries on our traditional territories. I also believe we should be providing business support services to individuals that want to establish their own businesses. If a company in the area requires a certain service, we should be promoting these as opportunities for our membership and when we have a member that wants to get into an associated business, we should help them develop a business to fill the void.

At times the role of Chief does take you to other parts of the country, if elected, I will make it a point to have face to face visits with members through my travels. I believe that being personable, talking with members is a very important role as Chief. Some members do really care about what is going on at Fox Lake, but don’t always have the chance to come and visit as much as they wish they could. Healthcare Healthcare on the reserve is very important for our community. You can never expand enough services for our people.
