Description
Santa Adelaida has been focused on sustainability practices for over 30 years. So when a local NGO suggested in 1992 that the cooperative begin farming organically, it was a symbiotic strategy that developed naturally from their roots. That year, its members began the transition to organic farming practices starting out on a small plot and eventually dedicated their whole operation to organic practices.
CELCCAR (Central Local Agricultural Cooperatives Caranavi) is a coffee co-op founded in 1965 in Caranavi, a small village in the tropical region of Los Yungas, Bolivia. CELCCAR is made up of 318 small-scale coffee farmers spread over the region of Caranavi.
PRODECOOP also has a quality control center and cupping lab to provide and maintain high quality coffees. The co-operative remains committed to producing coffee of the highest quality. Members have participated in the Nicaraguan coffee cupping competition, “The Cup of Excellence,” in which the cooperative was awarded first place and three of the top ten quality awards.
The Red Cherry Project has a wonderful story and is a showcase for the true potential of Indonesian coffee and this pilot project. This coffee comes from the family owned Jagong Mill and surrounding farms owned by Irham Junus, located in the Takengon coffee region of Indonesia. The Jagong mill was apparently built as something as an experiment by the Dutch, trying to develop better, more consistent coffees from the area. During the Achenese war, the mill was abandoned, and Irham was able to negotiate a purchase – so the Jagong mill is now owned by the Gayo Organic Coffee Association.
