Member Heads Up Update For Tuesday, December 22, 2009 Noted CGA Aided Great Escape Harold Garland, a pioneer in the accounting field, who rose to become Canada's assistant deputy minister of revenue and president of the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario, has died. For all his works in Canada, he may best be remembered for his role as a “penguin” in the famous Great Escape from Stalag-Luft 3, the German prisoner of war camp for Allied air force men that was made famous by Hollywood. Harold Ernest Garland was born in 1918 in Toronto. An excellent student, he accelerated through elementary grades, graduating from high school at the top of his class at 16. The Depression derailed plans for university. He worked as a bookkeeper before enlisting in the Air Force in 1939 after the outbreak of the Second World War. After training, he was given the rank of flight lieutenant at the tender age of 23 and assigned to the Royal Canadian Air Force's 425 Squadron as a navigator on Wellington bombers. On a mission to Stuttgart in 1943, his plane was hit by ground fire and crash-landed in a swamp in France. Garland was captured and sent to Stalag-Luft 3 near Sagan, about 100 kilometres southeast of Berlin. Read more... Canadians plan to give more generously in 2010 From the December 21 BIV Online. Maybe it’s the season of goodwill and eggnog speaking, but despite a challenging year, many Canadians say they plan to be more generous with their time and money, according to an Investor's Group survey. About 29 per cent of poll respondents said they would donate more time to worthwhile causes in 2010. About 19 per cent said they plan to increase the size of their donations next year. Richard Irish, Investors Group's vice-president of community affairs, said, "In a year when demand has increased among non-profit organizations of all stripes, it's good to see Canadians are giving what they can, even if it's not as much as they would like." The survey found that, on average, Canadians contributed 13 hours a month to volunteer work and donated $10.41 to non-profit organizations in 2009. Financial contributions were constrained this year by economic conditions, with 63 per cent of survey respondents saying they were unable to give as much as they wanted, although Canadians gave more to non-profits than they spent on Christmas gifts this year ($607). Almost 70 per cent of Canadians said volunteering their time to a cause was more fulfilling, but 80 per cent said they donated money this year compared with 52 per cent who said they had volunteered. Canadian Public Accountability Board (CPAB) Hiring for Key Positions CPAB, the regulator for the public company audit industry in Canada, has immediate requirement for two important positions: the Director, Inspections, and the Senior Manager, Inspections. Both positions involve building productive relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders to advance the integrity of financial reporting in Canada. The positions may be based in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto or Montreal. Candidates should have several years’ progressive accounting and audit experience (a minimum of 10 years for the Director; eight to 10 years for the Senior Manager) including manager level experience in a Big 6 or mid-size firm. In-depth knowledge of GAAP and GAAS is essential to both positions, as is demonstrated competence in risk assessment, relationship management, and strategic thinking. Analytic and consultative skills, combined with utmost integrity, are all prerequisites. CPAB is committed to providing career opportunities and related professional development second to none in a healthy, balanced work environment. The Director, Inspections is responsible for conducting in-depth interviews with audit partners and managers pertaining to select audit file reviews, and documenting findings for formal reporting. As a member of a highly skilled engagement team, the Director’s role involves collaborating with team members to ensure that inspections are strategic and value-adding to the audit firms, findings are material, and the inspection process is conducted in an efficient and effective manner in conformance with CPAB’s methodology. The Senior Manager, Inspections is responsible, in conjunction with the Director, Inspections, for preparing, conducting and documenting findings from interviews with audit partners and managers pertaining to audit file reviews. As a core member of a senior level engagement team, the Senior Manager’s role involves working closely with team members to ensure that inspections are strategic and value-adding to the audit firms, findings are material, and the inspection process is conducted in an efficient and effective manner in conformance with CPAB’s methodology.
