The Spokesperson and the Trainer A joint CPRS Vancouver/IABC BC professional development event Every organization needs a good spokesperson, someone who acts as the public face of the organization, to articulate the organization's achievements or address issues in a timely, credible manner. A spokesperson who has the power and ability to consistently deliver their corporate messages is an invaluable asset, playing a key role in building a positive reputation for their organization. But to get to this point requires practice and the use of proven strategies to deliver interviews with confidence. Learn about the key strategies employed by the most successful spokespeople from a spokesperson for one of Canada's leading telecommunication companies and an experienced media trainer. You'll also learn about the key role an internal communicator plays in helping spokesperson(s) excel in delivering corporate messages. OUR SPEAKERS Alyn Edwards, Vice President, Peak Communicators Alyn traded his 30-year career as senior news reporter (BCTV, CBC-TV) and journalist (Toronto Telegram, freelance writer) to set up PEAK Communicators. He's got a nose for the news, conducted thousands of interviews, and knows most of the senior news reporters in B.C. personally, which goes a long way in providing media counsel to clients. Alyn's skills as a media trainer have prepared hundreds of senior executives for the best and worst the media can bring to bear. As a video producer, he's scripted, narrated, directed and, on occasion, filmed dozens of corporate and client videos. He brings his news experience to video production by finding the really good stories and making sure the people who work for or are affected by organizations tell those stories well. He is also an experienced presentation coach for executives and managers, and a versatile writer, on-air talent and in-demand emcee. Alyn received his post-secondary education at Toronto's York University in English. He's a long-time board member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver and heads up the organization's communications committee. In addition, he serves on the board and as a speaker series director for the Canadian Public Relations Society's Vancouver chapter. Click here for more information about Alyn. Shawn Hall, Senior Communications Manager, Media and Public Relations, TELUS Shawn Hall has been TELUS' B.C. spokesperson for almost six years. In addition to general media relations responsibilites in the province, he handles national media portfolios including issues and crisis management, finance, HR & Labour Relations, operations, legal, and TELUS International. He is the past president of CPRS Vancouver. Prior to joining the public relations industry he spent a decade working as a community print reporter and editor at several newspapers across B.C.'s Interior and in the Lower Mainland. When not chatting on in the media about the latest trend in telecommunications he's at home with his young family or in the garden.
