Description
Bridgeway Academy provides an academic program to students aged 5-19 with learning disabilities. For most students, the aim is to prepare them for a return to the public school system. As part of a long-term strategy, we work collectively to teach students and their families to act as advocates for themselves. The students are the focus of our work and the reason we exist, but their education is only a part of Bridgeway's role. When a child has a learning disability, it affects the whole family. Parents of our students often describe the experience as "living under an educational dark cloud". By the time a child comes to Bridgeway, many families have been under this cloud for several years. It is an extremely isolating and frustrating experience for the child and for the family. We work with the extended family to help them understand the nature of their child's specific challenge and the learning process he or she will undertake with us. We also introduce them to a network of other families and professionals dealing with learning disabilities. It is serious work and we are extremely serious about it. But that doesn't mean we can t have a lot of fun in the process. Bridgeway resounds with laughter, enthusiasm and the boundless energy of children regaining lost confidence, making friends, participating and above all, finding joy in re-discovering how to learn. The school was founded in 1983 by a parent who was concerned that her child's educational needs were not being met...
