The Brain Injury Association of Chatham-Kent enhances the quality of life for survivors of acquired brain injury (ABI) and their family members and works towards reducing the occurrence of ABI. We are committed to providing support services for survivors and their families and educational services for the people in the community of Chatham-Kent. More About Us ... Each year in Canada, over 11,000 people die as a result of a traumatic brain injury and 6,000 more become permanently disabled. Approximately 173 people in Chatham-Kent will sustain an acquired brain injury this year. There are many different forms of acquired brain injury the more prominent being stroke and traumatic brain injury (i.e.: automobile collisions, sports injury). Traumatic brain injury is the #1 killer and disabler of young Canadians under the age of 45. The most frightening part of a brain injury is that it can happen to anyone, a primary example is the unpredictability of automobile collisions. However, through educational efforts such as seatbelt use, we can hope to reduce the severity of the injury. Post injury, as a survivor progresses, the injury takes a toll on the family; one family member, a spouse or child perhaps, may need to assume the role of primary care giver illustrating that brain injuries happen to families not just individuals, and why our mission supports all involved.
