Yarmouth Mutual

Description

The Yarmouth Mutual Fire Insurance Company opened its first office in October of 1881 and was named for the township from which it was founded Yarmouth Township. On May 4th 1881 a meeting was held at the Township Hall at Yarmouth Centre to consult whether it is expedient to establish a Fire Insurance Company upon the mutual principle. Thirty people attended the meeting and it was decided to form a Mutual Fire Insurance Company thereby insuring one another against a loss by fire. Rural properties in 1881 had difficulties finding companies that would insure their farms because of their locations away from city fire halls. The first draft of the company's by-laws was passed by the Board of Directors on September 20th, 1881. William Leonard was appointed as the first Manager/Secretary/Treasurer of the company. The company has grown and expanded the insurance products offered since those early days, and we now offer a full line of insurance coverages for homes, commercial, auto and farms. Although our products have changed since 1881 we are still a company that is founded and remains on the principle of mutuality. In 1998 the company came full circle by purchasing the former Yarmouth Township building as their corporate office. In today's business world were companies come and go it is rare to find a company that has served its community for 129 years.
