Description

Water is one of Canada's most abundant and valuable resources. Thurber offers several services related to managing water supply, power generation, and irrigation. We provide expertise in dam and canal engineering, including site investigations, engineering, abutment and shoreline stability, selection of construction materials, and construction inspection and testing. Thurber has developed state-of-the-art geotechnical laboratories in response to the requirement for high quality strength and permeability testing in the design of large dams.

Industrial projects often involve complex static and dynamic loading. At Thurber, our unique set of geotechnical engineering skills and experience allows us to provide solutions for these kinds of problems. Our role in industrial projects typically extends beyond foundation design to developing all aspects of plant site infrastructure, including roads, dams, ponds, pipelines, and underground services. During construction, we assess conformance to project specifications through quality control and quality assurance testing of soils, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt.

This iconic bridge, designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2012, accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists crossing the Bow River. Weak overburden soils required this 130 m long, single span bridge to be supported on concrete piles up to 28 m long, founded in the underlying bedrock (Photo: Neil Zeller).

Thurber’s environmental scientists and technologists oversee the assessment, remediation and reclamation of brownfields. In addition, we provide groundwater and hydrogeological studies as well as Phase I, II and III assessments for property transfers.

Today, Thurber Engineering Ltd. has more than 300 employees in nine offices across Canada , and is wholly owned by its senior employees. It continues to build its reputation by providing a full complement of geotechnical, environmental, and materials engineering and testing services to its clients, working closely with them to provide timely, high-value solutions and technical support.
