"It has always fascinated me how the Aboriginal inventers of the canoe had the foresight to design a craft that would fit perfectly, upside down, on cars that hadn't yet been imagined. Not only that, but they had such a sense of fashion that their invention would fit like a dapper cap as car and canoe head up the narrowing highways toward certain adventure. I mean, think about it "“ what other vehicle on Earth can you use as a hat when it rains, a shelter when it storms or a table when it's time to eat? And what other country would define its people by their ability to make love in such a vehicle? Certainly the Germans don't do this with the Volkswagen "Bug"! I love my canoe. Nothing in the material world has cost less; nothing has afforded me more opportunity to flee that world. In this age of fretting over our carbon footprint, how comforting is it to know that you not only don't require fuel but will not be spilling at the dock? For those who still follow the original art of canoe manufacturing, this is transportation that can be made from completely natural materials and can be maintained forever with natural repair materials. Given such wonderful tradition, then, it is only appropriate that while we have the National Gallery in Ottawa to hold Tom Thomson's Jack Pine and the Art Gallery of Ontario to show his West Wind, we also have the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough to honour the craft that got him to such exquisite locations. For the canoe is as much a part of the Canadian landscape as the trees, the rocks, the mountains, the rivers "“ and even the highways heading for essential escape."
