Description

Sunrise has a support group for birth mothers. Many women have found this connection to be helpful in normalizing their experience and feelings. Learning about and understanding the experience of other women who have been where you are can be helpful in your process. Some women have established lifelong connections through this process. You can come to the group any time before, or after, your baby is born.

Birthmother's Day is a day to honor and remember the motherhood experience of birthmothers, the women who placed their children in adoption. It is held on the second Saturday in May, the day before Mother's Day. Birthmother's Day was created in 1990 by a group of Seattle, Washington birthmothers who met each other at a birth parent support group. It grew out of the shared recognition that Mother's Day is one of the most painful days of the year - second only to the birthday of our children. Yet birthmothers have been shut out of the traditional celebration and remembrances of the holiday.

Africa Sunrise has created the Africa Development Fund for the benefit of children and families in Africa. Examples of projects we have supported are school programs, including paying school fees for orphans living in the community, providing school uniforms and assisting single parents through a family education and preservation program. We also supported several families who were living with an HIV+ family member by providing social work services and support as well as health education and access to free pre-school.
