What an optometrist looks for in an eye exam is certainly more than "Which is better, one or two?". As much as this is an integral part of an eye exam and must be done accurately to provide a clear and comfortable perscription for glasses or contacts, we will look for anything wrong with the eye and ocular system. The binocular system also will be checked to make sure that the eyes are working together properly. We'll evaluate the external and internal eye health, checking for everything from blepharitis and dry eye to more serious problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal holes on detachments, as well as other retinal problems. Optometrists will often be the doctor that first discovers medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. Once all inspections are completed and data has been gathered, optometrists are best suited to provide spectacle or contact lens correction, visual treatment or counseling for laser treatment or other surgery.
