Marten Bos began his building career early … at his father ’s knee, tool belt strapped on, hammer in hand. As the son of Dutch immigrants who came to Canada in 1952 for a better life, Marten learned first hand that hard work, honesty and integrity were the keys, not only to a better life, but to a better person. Those same old-fashioned values are just as relevant and alive today, and are the cornerstones of Sobella House & Home. Marten, along with his wife, Karen, understand the dreams clients have for their families, the hard work and sacrifices they ’ve made to make their dream a reality. They understand because they share the same dreams for their own family. That is why Marten and Karen are commited to building every house as though it were their own. "We consider it a blessing and priviledge to build homes for our clients. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously." It is a priviledge and a blessing to build homes for our clients. And because we believe that when we are blessed, it is not only for our own benefit, but that we might also bless others, we have partnered with Compassion Canada to help fund a project called 'Units of Hope' in Kibaale, Uganda, Africa. 'Units of Hope' centers on the 755 children who attend Kibaale Community Centre. The children who attend Kibaale Cummunity Centre are chosen because of their extremely challenging life circumstances. Many are orphans living in extreme poverty and, without support, would have great difficulty providing for themselves the basic necessities of life, let alone an education or other opportunities to prosper. The homes of all 755 children have been visited and the challenge exists to provide appropriate homes for the children who are living in unsafe, poverty houses. Those children who have the most serious living situations have been identified and a priority list for new homes has been developed. For those children, a 'Unit of Hope' will provide: A New Home: with a metal roof that can be used for rain collection that is vital during the dry season; A New Pit Latrine: Sewage disposal is a critical piece of the strategy to develop safer living. Without proper waste disposal, disease can spread through a home. A Water Tank: In a place such as Kibaale, collecting water during the dry season can be the difference between life and death. Catching rainwater in a large enough tank allows a family to draw from this resource during hard times. As well, rainwater is far safer to drink than disease-ridden river and pond water. Water tanks are essential for safe living in Kibaale.
