Description

What is ART? Active release technique is a patented, powerful soft tissue diagnostic and treatment system used to manage problems involving soft-tissues (muscles, ligament, connective tissue, nerves). which uses motion (active stretching) and tension (practitioner applied) to the problem area in a muscle or other soft tissue. This treatment technique was developed by Dr. Michael Leahy, a chiropractor, who was getting dramatic and fast results while treating elite athletes. The technique has become popular in the arena of elite athletics (professional hockey, baseball, basketball, football and track and field) in both treating athletic injuries and enhancing and maximizing performance. It is fast becoming a treatment of choice for other soft tissue conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow (extensor tendonitis) and shoulder problems. Who can benefit from ART treatment? Since ART providers are qualified to diagnose and treat over 400 structures, we see a broad range of injuries and conditions. ART providers treat professional and amateur athletes, people injured due to work place or motor vehicle accidents, and people who develop pain throughout their normal daily activities. Common conditions treated with ART include: muscle strains/tears, shoulder problems (impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tendonitis, bicipital tendonitis, capsular adhesions), radiating pain/numbness down the arms or legs, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, headaches, piriformis syndrome, to name a few. What causes the problem and why is the treatment effective? Muscles and soft tissues can be affected in the following ways resulting in pain and dysfunction: Dr.Cameron with ART Treatment team at USA Ironman Competition, Lake Placid N.Y. The result of this situation is the production and infiltration of tough fibrous scar tissue known as fibrous adhesions. Fibrous adhesions do not allow the muscles to move, stretch or glide over other muscles and nerves as they should. The result is continued tighteness, pain, weakness and altered biomechanics. If nerves become trapped, you may experience numbness and tingling in the extremities. This situation has been described as having muscles stuck together with Velcro. Releasing and eliminating these adhesions is what makes ART successful. Does ART treatment hurt and how long does it take? If any discomfort is experienced with this treatment, it is usually described as a "˜good hurt'. In many cases, patients report significant improvement after one treatment. The length of time required to eliminate the problem or reach "maximum therapeutic benefit" varies. Some conditions resolve vary quickly (within several visits) while others can take significantly longer. For more information on ART, go to www.activerelease.com .
