Description

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS OR CERTIFICATION SHOULD I ASK FOR FROM MY ROOFING COMPANY? METRO TORONTO BUILDING TRADE LICENSE This license is issued to contractors who have successfully completed a written test, relevant to their specific trade. Applicants must also pass a Toronto Police background check. The license is issued with photo identification and is renewed annually. MINISTRY OF LABOUR SAFETY TRAINING The Onatrio Ministry of Labour makes it a legal obligation for all roofing contractors to safety train their workers and to enforce safety codes as per the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (R.S.O. 1990, c.O.1). All workers and supervisor must pass an accredited safety course pertaining particularly to fall protection. Knowing the proper use of equipment the handling of materials and emergency procedures are all requirements under the law. LIABILITY INSURANCE This insurance protects you and your property in case of accidents. The protection includes a general liability as well as coverage specific to the type of work your contractor is doing. For example, open flame rubber membrane flat roofing requires a very specific insurance for total coverage. WORKERS COMPENSATION (WSIB) WSIB coverage is mandatory. Every worker, whether an employee or sub-contractor must be covered. RoofWorks fulfills, and in fact, exceeds all the above requirements. WHAT MATERIALS DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM FOR SLOPED ROOFING? Asphalt shingles are installed on over 80% of most residential homes. This is because they are durable, cost effective and come in a wide variety of colours, textures and styles. Premium quality cedar shakes and shingles are also available. Sloped roofing tiles are also made from metal, plastics and rubber materials. Often, the exterior design of your home will help to determine the shingle type and colour that is most suitable. Your RoofWorks representative can assist you in choosing the material that is both functional and aesthetic in design and most importantly, just right for you. WHY ARE FLAT ROOFS SUCH A PROBLEM AND SO EXPENSIVE? Flat roofs often hold water and "pond" as a result of poor design or structural settling. Continually wet or ponded surfaces pre-maturely decay and cause roof leaks. Structural repairs to correct these defects can also be expensive. At RoofWorks, flat roofing is our specialty. RoofWorks uses a modern, rubber membrane, two-ply roofing system. Think of it as a waterproof carpet on your roof, only really tough and durable. This material is usually bonded or sealed using an open flame. At RoofWorks we always strip off and dispose of the old roofing. It's not uncommon to find numerous layers of old roofing. This can drive up labour and dumping costs. At RoofWorks we ensure that our flat roof installers are fully trained and certified. We also carry, for your protection, liability insurance specifically for open flame rubber membrane flat roofing. Safety conscious roofing contractors pay a hefty premium for this mandatory insurance coverage. "Fly by nighters" won't have this coverage or can't get it.
