We were honoured to be asked to provide the structural engineering solution for the eight-story Twenty Gothic Condominiums: honoured and challenged. Because the condos are situated beside and above the Toronto Transit Commission subway tunnel, we had two significant concerns. Our design needed to make certain that owners wouldn't feel the subway vibrations, and we needed to ensure construction would not disrupt to the busy subway system, which provides critical transportation to over a million riders each workday. RJC collaborated closely with the Monarch Group and the design team to provide engineering solutions during the design stage through to the construction stage.

In 2012, the people of RJC collaborated to create our Green Operations Plan . The living document outlines our vision and policies and is updated regularly with progress on initiatives and new ideas. It guides us as we migrate to a reduced environmental footprint . A ground-breaking dampening system for tall buildings is another way we continue to innovate within the engineering industry. Patented viscous dampers designed by the University of Toronto in collaboration with RJC personnel will control accelerations for wind induced motions and seismic effects. RJC is also applying Performance Based Design for new buildings and retrofits. This novel technique provides state-of-the-art technical solutions and superior efficiencies that were not previously possible. RJC is emerging as the largest independent and Canadian-owned consulting engineering firm in the field. The new Engineering V building seeks to create a dramatic showcase for the creative labours of the Waterloo Engineering faculty. Utilizing the typology of the daylight factory, the new building creates a singular architectural presence wherein four engineering departments and a state-of-the-art student design centre are housed. Phase 1 of the project consists of a 175,000 square foot, 6 storey concrete structure located outside the campus ring road. The design focused on providing a durable and adaptable structure as the needs of the University are growing to suit an expanding graduate program. The majority of the building consists of conventional offices, labs and classrooms on the upper four floors. The lower two floors feature a state of the art design workshop centre where students can express their design creativity in a ‘hands on’ environment. In keeping with the industrial nature of the space, the design workshop features architecturally exposed concrete structural framing.

Leslie is a technical specialist for RJC BC Restoration and Building Science Group. He is involved in project work, technical review, and internal education in materials engineering, building envelope engineering, and structural restoration. A specialist in evaluating and predicting the durability of steel, concrete and timber structures, Leslie has worked for over 20 years on construction and renovation projects involving specifications for durability and service life, investigation and quantification of damage to structures, and specifications for rehabilitation of structures. He is a recognized authority in his field and teaches courses in both educational and professional settings. Leslie graduated in structural engineering from the University of Toronto in 1985. He received his Ph.D. in materials engineering from Cambridge University in 1990 and completed the AIBC Building Education Program in 1998. With ten years of engineering experience behind him, he joined RJC in 1998, was made an Associate of the firm in 2002, and Principal in 2006. He became a LEED Accredited Professional in 2003, a Registered Roofing Consultant and was elected a Fellow of Engineers Canada in 2009.
