Experience - Does the contractor have experience and do their crews? The installation must be done according to the manufacturers specifications in order for them to honor the warranty. You may pay less initially but in the long run if the roof fails prematurely and the manufacturer won't warrant the product due to improper installation you have lost significant money.

It can be but it is crucial you read the terms of the warranty very carefully. Many products do come with a true Lifetime (50year) warranty but expect to pay for that premium. Recently the fiberglass shingle manufacturers have re-named their warranty's and are calling them "limited lifetime" shingles. Typically a truly lifetime shingle comes with 50 year coverage but many of these limited warranties are the same as the 30 year coverage and have been re-named to appeal to the consumer. There is nothing wrong with a 30 year shingle at all it is the industry standard but it is misleading if you are sold/told it will last a lifetime!.
