Description

We believe that everything we do has the potential to impact the environment around us and over time impact the whole world. Our goal is to not only provide kayaking services that allow our clients the opportunity to form an intimate bond with Northern Vancouver Island, but to do so through responsible sea kayaking environmental awareness and safety. Our commitment to sustainability means environmental stewardship is a primary responsibility of our company. Responsible tourism, is tourism which operates in such a way as to minimize negative impacts on the environment. We encourage our clients to maintain a respectable distance from all wild life and to resist the temptation to engage wild life in human interaction. If you need to get closer, invest in a better zoom-lenses. In the past it has been popular to "rescue abandoned" seal pups, by well meaning people. In a lot of cases seal pups have been abandoned or not able to be found by their mother after moving because of the close threat of well meaning people. Most pups are fine where they are and need to have that safe distance feeling in order to stay there to be found by the mother when she returns from feeding.

We provide free delivery & pickup to BC Ferries and to water taxis for all our clients. Odyssey Kayaking is In Port Hardy located at 8625 Shipley Street. (across from the Post Office) News update, North Coast Trail, April 10, 2008 Good news to everyone who has been waiting for this event. Northern Vancouver Island Trails Society has announced that the trail is virtually complete. Crews are cleaning up winter damage, doing minor re-routes and constructing a campsite at Shushartie Bay. The official opening is scheduled for May 10, 2008, so get out those hiking boots and burn up some trail May 10th.

We officially opened up our kayaking business in 1996 as Odyssey Kayaking and are connected to the communities we work in on many levels. The name ODYSSEY was created from our favourite expression "AH! de sea!". Outgrowing our 16' fibreglass squareback canoe, and 18' aluminum outboard powered boat, we moved into kayaking as a sustainable family activity. Being close to the water and able to access this recreation buffet has been the focus of countless family activities. Wilderness camping and trekking in and around Northern Vancouver Island, has allowed us a familiarity with a lot of exciting new discoveries. After more than 37 years of living on Northern Vancouver Island, the sight of the pristine wilderness re-impresses us. Pat has taken several guiding courses, NAUI diving certification, Advanced Wilderness First Aid and as well is licensed to operate up to a 12 passenger water taxi. He enjoys instructing people in kayaking, especially when it comes to emphasizing the safe enjoyment of it, and the appreciation of the local habitat. He has experienced this vast playground from as far away as the Queen Charlottes down to Vancouver.
