Lower Falls Redevelopment What we've done: The project involves expansion of the existing Almonte Generating Station to increase the maximum output from 2.4MW to 4.6MW. To do this, we will be harnessing the power of not only the middle falls in Almonte, but the Lower Falls as well. The existing powerhouse and intake works will be converted to an intake structure. The existing turbines and generators will be removed and two 3 metre diameter penstocks will be constructed linking the intake to a new powerhouse to be constructed below the Lower Falls . The existing turbines will be modified, fitted with larger generators and re-installed in a new powerhouse. This is a great example of Green Power. We are increasing generation output, using a renewable resource, which will help offset the need for other types of generation, including coal-fired (airborne pollutants) and nuclear (nuclear waste). We also have no storage capabilities, which means we are a run-of-river generating station, passing the water as it comes downstream. This new Generating Station carries on the proud tradition of waterpower in Almonte, upon which the Town itself was founded. It was nearly 200 years ago, when David Shepherd built the first mill in Almonte, using the power of the falls to drive the machinery. The first mill on the Lower Falls site, using the waterpower, was built in the 1850's (source: Gerry Wheatley). In terms of an actual hydroelectric Generating Station, the first in Almonte was built in 1890, right beside the Generating Station that was just converted to an intake structure. Many towns in this part of the country can boast the same sort of history, but few can say that they've kept the tradition alive like Almonte and Mississippi Mills. What we've built on the Lower Falls is a tip of the cap to our forefathers and a valuable asset to our present-day and future residents. Since 100% of the Shares in MRPC are owned by the Town, ALL of the profits from the company go directly to the Town, benefitting you (the residents), for years to come. This is a day that we've been looking forward to for the past 9 years, when we first looked at the viability of this new station. Alot of hard work, time, and money has gone into making this project a reality. The Lower Falls Generating Station will be a wonderful asset to the Town of Mississippi Mills for man, many years. Landscaping of the park will begin in the next few weeks, once the ground dries out a little more. The green roof system will be installed next month.
