The Cabecares Reserve lands abut up against La Amistad International Park in southern Costa Rica. The MBMF and BON partnered with the Cabecar community of Jameikari to assist in the establishment of an eco-tourism/ethno-tourism enterprise which would allow the community to provide tourism opportunities that highlight the natural tropical environment of their reserve and the community’s traditions and culture. The Jameikari community is located along the Pacuare River, which is one of the most acclaimed white water rafting rivers in the world.

The Community Opportunities Fund was established as a competitive grant program to allow local communities and organizations to design and conduct projects to enhance community living. All proposals seeking support under this grant are required to meet eligibility criteria and proposal guidelines that meet Model Forest goals and objectives. Projects have been established in most of the MBMF communities that promote community beautification, recreation, culture and heritage, education, environmental awareness and economic development.

In an effort to promote the understanding of boreal forest ecosystem functions and natural resource management, the Manitoba Model Forest (MBMF) continues to develop curriculum packages for teachers that are accredited by Manitoba Education . The MBMF has developed four curriculum packages, to date, for junior high and high school courses in an effort to provide boreal forest educational material for students living in urban and rural environments. The MBMF Education Coordinator offers professional development in-service training to assist teachers in the implementation of these curricula.

Our organization was established in 1992, as part of the Model Forest Program of the Canadian government. The Model Forest Program was developed in response to national and international commitments surrounding the need to move towards sustainable forest management. These commitments included those made at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, as well as those found in Canada's first ever National Forest Strategy and the Canada’s Forest Accord . The Manitoba Model Forest was one of ten Model Forest sites selected during a competitive process to participate in the Model Forest Program.
