Founded by Dr. Seymour Papert in 1981, LCSI is a leading publisher of award-winning, constructivist educational software for K-9 schools around the world.

The primary objectives of our software are to develop a child's creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Not only are these key elements of normal intellectual development but these are the type of skills that workers of the next century will need to succeed.

LCSI brings together some of the world's most innovative educational designers, teachers, software engineers and writers to develop products based on the Logo -- constructivist -- philosophy of learning. Foremost in the group is Dr. Seymour
Papert, a founder of the Artificial Intelligence Lab of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the principal creator of the Logo language.

LCSI's current flagship school product, MicroWorlds, is a powerful Logo-based multimedia authoring tool that lets students in grades 2 and up create impressive projects incorporating movies, photos, sound, graphics, text, and animation. LCSI has won 23 prestigious educational software awards in North America,
Europe and Asia.

MicroWorlds is fully integrated with the World Wide Web. This allows students to load their favorite interactive MicroWorlds projects onto the Web. These dynamic projects can be viewed by students in other countries. In addition, teachers can locate curriculum ideas in the Project Library section of this web site.

Our Philosophy - Learning for the 21st Century

The constructivist philosophy believes that students excel by building and constructing for themselves the specific knowledge they need, rather than having a teacher dictate numerous facts.
Teachers play an important role as knowledge facilitators.

Constructivists devote more attention to higher order thinking and problem solving skills. They believe that basic skills should not be learned in isolation. Curriculum themes should be integrated just like they are in the business world and public administration.

The successful nations of the 21st century will be the ones with an educated, flexible, creative workforce. Although there is much debate on how to develop this type of workforce, there is agreement in one area: the vast amount of information available dictates that simple memorization will not do. Students must learn how to analyze problems that have no predetermined answer and come up with creative solutions. A spirit of inventiveness must be developed in the workers of tomorrow. There can be no fear of failure.
Encouraging the development of these types of abilities will make the difference between being a country that is moderately successful and one that is a world leader.

For all these reasons, truly stimulating, open-ended constructivist educational software will become a highly valued component of the best education systems of the future.
