Headquartered in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Kraken Sonar Systems Inc. is a marine technology company engaged in the design and development of high performance sonars and sensors for military and commercial applications. The Kraken team includes internationally recognized experts in undersea remote sensing applications. Kraken’s experience includes a long history of research and development of SAS systems and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). Kraken was spun out from Marport Deep Sea Technologies in September 2012.

SAS hardware (transducer arrays and electronics) and signal processing have been a research topic at the NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC) in La Spezia, Italy for many years. For over 12 years, this research effort was led by Dr. Marc Pinto, who now serves as Kraken’s Chief Technology Officer.

Marport is an award-winning designer and manufacturer of sonar systems and sensors for underwater defence and commercial fisheries.

Karl co-founded Marport Canada Inc. in July 2003 and served as its President and Chief Executive Officer until December 2011. Karl has over 30 years of technical and executive experience in communications, electronic navigation systems, and digital imaging. Karl co-founded Telepix Imaging Inc., a world leader in digital imaging software and photo e-commerce which was purchased by a European photo equipment manufacturer for over $50 million. Karl was twice named as a Top 50 CEO by Atlantic Business magazine. He was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame in May, 2012.
