Now, the resorts are working with local businesses to provide affordable options for shopping (especially for amber), sightseeing and dining. Several good restaurants line the Malecon (seaside boulevard), and others are located near the attractive downtown park area, though some longtime restaurants have closed, unable to lure diners away from the all-inclusive (and prepaid) buffets. Nonetheless, guided adventure excursions have blossomed, taking advantage of the rugged Cordillera Septentrional mountains, beautiful beaches and nearby wilderness regions.

Although not generally a city that wears its history on its sleeve, Helsinki offers fine examples of neoclassical architecture in the historic center around Senate Square. Although the city was founded in the 16th century, most of its architecture dates from the 19th century or later. The Helsinki skyline is still evolving as striking buildings emerge downtown. Helsinki's bold architecture mirrors a national willingness to adopt new technologies and innovations. The head office of Nokia, the mobile-communications giant, is housed in a gleaming glass palace in Espoo, just west of Helsinki. But Finland's traditional roots are never far away. Finns, including Helsinki residents, regard cell phones and other wireless-based technologies simply as what they are: tools.

Although Victoria is in British Columbia, it feels more like England than Canada. The city was founded in the 1800s as an outpost of the British Empire and populated by settlers attracted to its mild climate. Historic Victoria boasts several grand buildings, lots of shops, and aesthetic touches reflecting its English heritage. Today, part of the city's charm comes from old-world traditions juxtaposed with new-world experiences.
