Description
Barker Product data a. Barker product is a decorative, economical residential and commercial wall panel with the look and feel of true ceramic tile. These panels are manufactured in 4' x 8' and 5' x 5' sheets utilizing the finest quality formulated paints designed to meet the exacting standards that are set by Barker products.b. Car-load lots of 4' x 8' and 5' x 5' x 1/8" hardboard are received as substrate for all Barker products. This hardboard substrate is manufactured and specified as "smooth two sides" (S-2-S) oil-tempered hardboard. NOTE : (S-1-S) or "screen-back" cannot be used because it does not meet Barker quality standards. The board is pregrooved or "scored" to simulate individual "tiles" and edges are bevelled before entering the production line. From here the "fill" and "base" coats are applied by use of curtain coaters. Curtain coating, as the name implies,
consists of passing the board through a curtain of paint - the amount of paint applied to the board is determined by the thickness of the paint applied to the boards is determined by the thickness of the paint and the speed at which the board passes through the curtain. Following both the fill and base coat operation the board passes through paint curing cavities to dry the paints. The Barker drying process is unique, and requires no heat. Specially formulated paints crosslink or dry within seconds when exposed to a catalyst, in this case a gas which circulates within the curing chamber or the production machine. the vapour permeation cure (VPC) finish is extremely durable, hard yet flexible, scratch and mark resistant and superior to conventional or melamine finishes. At this point the vapour-moisture resistant* qualities are built into the panel. *(Gas cure advantages are important to remember when conside-
ring the flexing that occurs when transporting and installing a similar product, a brittle surface such as melanime can develop hair line crack, most of which remain invisible at first. This can allow moisture to enter the surface of the board and attack the hardboard backing causing blistering and crazing leading to eventual complete breakdown.)
The panels are roll printed with the potential of up to five colours all in precise registration. Each printing head can run independently of the others however they are all synchronized to run together when desired. The fourth coating operation consists of the top coat which is applied by a curtain coater and from here the panels proceed down the line into baking ovens for final drying and inspection. The panels enter a "water bath" to insure proper and controlled moisture content, inspected, then automatically packaged in crates of eight per carton.
