With experience in operations, planning, business development, consulting, financing and R&D, Julian Taylor is familiar with large and small organizations. These range from large multidisciplinary, engineering and specialist consulting groups, through business start-ups, and a major integrated energy corporation. Julian has extensive experience in planning and has managed numerous projects, ranging from construction projects, through a variety of new ventures, R&D programs, IT, engineering studies, feasibility assessments and a company turnaround. He has worked with a number of different industries, but is particularly familiar with the energy sector, having worked in different parts of the large energy arena since the mid-1970s. This has included extensive involvement with such areas as oil and gas exploration strategies, regulatory requirements, the challenges of deregulation, new energy technologies, energy-environment issues, and energy policy development. Through this work he has developed a deep appreciation of the realities of business challenges in this sector and the dynamics of the energy business. This range of experience provides him with an unusually broad perspective and understanding of technology, business and social issues - attributes that he can deploy to assist his clients. Julian Taylor built a corporate planning and strategy group for a major integrated energy company, and played a guiding role in assisting the executive with the development of overall business strategy. During his 9 years in this position, the company not only grew from $1.6 to $10 billion in assets, but went through inevitable major upheavals. Julian worked extensively with many internal groups to help them plan and deal successfully with change. Julian has hands-on management experience. He has been responsible for several construction projects, and coordinated the regulatory, environmental assessment and design aspects of a $130 million gas pipeline, for which he was also responsible for developing the financing proposals. He was assigned to manage a money losing refuelling business which he stabilized and made profitable within 6 months by reconfiguring operations, renegotiating contracts, liquidating assets while improving customer service. He has also managed a number of research and development contracts.He has long experience in the energy sector and been actively involved in energy policy matters. As President of the Canadian Institute of Energy, he took part in World Energy Council meetings; he was a member of the BC Energy Council in the early '90s and contributed to the BC Energy Policy Review in 2002. Earlier he was involved with energy policy studies funded by UNDP for the Dominican Republic and the Basque region of Spain. He continues working with different levels of government, conducting analysis and assessment as a precursor to scoping technology and energy strategy. Julian co-founded a successful engineering technology start-up which now employs well over 100 people working in the area of gas separation & purification. Subsequently he has carried out due diligence work, and been intimately involved in several new start-up ventures, developing business & marketing plans and making investor presentations in the energy services, natural gas fueling, fuel cell and hydrogen storage areas. In addition to his experience in the conventional energy sector, over his 30+ in the energy field he has also had hands-on engineering experience in solar energy system analysis, tidal power feasibility work, low-head hydro turbine design and project development and wave power assessment. In other consulting assignments, Julian has assisted clients develop specific business strategies and assess the market viability and commercialization strategies for a variety of new technologies. He has worked with major project developers as well as entrepreneurs developing novel energy technologies, fire engineering techniques, desalination, cryogenic systems, and optical gas detection technology. Julian has presented technical papers at several major energy and automotive conferences. Julian is very familiar with venture financing, and also with the requirements and challenges of transitioning companies from private to public ownership by different routes. He is familiar with the requirements of corporate governance, and sits as a board member of both private and public companies.
