Mr. Oliphant is a community leader who has been standing up for the rights of Canadians for decades. He has worked with small and large groups whose aims are to provide affordable housing, create economic opportunities for new Canadians, reduce poverty and foster peace and social justice. In the past decade, Rob served in our community through his work as the Lead Minister at Eglinton St. George’s United Church in Toronto, one of the largest United Church congregations in Canada.
As a long standing member of Citizen with Disabilities Ontario, Melissa has continually focused on issues of social justice and community engagement. Having lived in several different communities across Ontario, she has gained perspective on what community engagement can look like in different environments. She is currently working with other Citizens with Disabilities Ontario members to develop a forum for engaging youth with disabilities later next summer.
Charles has been in the adaptive technology field for almost 30 years. For the last 10 years his main focus has been accessible media on the web, specifically captioning and descriptive video. He is co-director of Inclusive Media and Design Inc (www.inclusivemedia.ca) a company that provides captioning and video description services as well as tools and consulting on issues related to media accessibility. Charles teaches Ryerson University’s School for Disability Studies where he focuses on accessibility, technology, and Inclusive and Universal Design.
Laurie Letheren is a lawyer at ARCH Disability Law Centre which is a specialty community legal aid clinic dedicated to defending and advancing the equality rights of people with disabilities in Ontario. Laurie joined ARCH in March 2006 bringing her experience in addressing the legal issues of people with disabilities. Laurie has extensive litigation experience. She has represented individuals and disability organizations at various tribunals and provincial and federal courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
