Description

The hobby of astronomy was the tie that bound Peter Hanson, Ted
Leckie and Tom Andersen. One day in 1991, Hanson showed the others a package that was typical of the astronomy programs of the day. The three felt strongly that they could make a better program, and founded Sienna Software, Inc.

Today students, hobbyists and serious enthusiasts all agree that
Starry Night Deluxe is as entertaining to use as it is informative. Writes one parent:

I got my Starry Night yesterday...already I have stopped cooking, cleaning, and sleeping....there are too many cool things to do in
Starry Night! The example movies are stunning, and they put meaning to concepts that are otherwise impossible to picture. I have a seven-year-old who UNDERSTANDS how an eclipse works, thanks to Starry Night!

With this true sky simulation tool you can:
- place yourself from your own backyard to anywhere on the earth to anywhere in the solar system and experience an accurate recreation of the sky
- travel in time from 4713 BC to 9999 AD
- see over 19 millions stars
- view the constellations using classical illustrations
- trace the orbits of planets and comets
- blast off from the earth
- create star charts for your next camping trip
- even see what the night sky looked like on your birthday

What sets Starry Night Deluxe apart from other astronomy programs is its superior user interface, its fast performance and its true to life representations of the sky. Said the New York Times,
"There are few experiences as invigorating as being out in the countryside standing under a canopy of stars on a still night.
Starry Night conveys that feeling better than any other desktop planetarium."

Starry Night Deluxe is a well designed application that behaves like your other programs such as your word processor or graphics program. You can manipulate the windows and objects with the
Magnifying Glass, Object Selector, or the unique Grabber Tool - no other astronomy program has it. Open multiple windows (for example, to view a solar eclipse from the earth and space at the same time), copy images to other programs, and even connect to an exclusive Internet site, LiveSky for up to the minute information. LiveSky is smart enough to know what object you are interested in and saves you time by providing links to web sites about that object only.

The true to life representations of the sky and space objects are amazing. Start the program during the day and the sky is blue. Set the program to fast forward and watch the shadows of the trees lengthen on the horizon as the sun sets. As the sky darkens, the brightest stars appear first followed by the fainter ones. In case you live in a city with a lot of light pollution, you can even set the program to show fewer stars to show only the ones you can see from your backyard.

Click on any object and open a window with detailed astronomical information, including rise and set times, distance away, location, and ascension and declination for setting you telescope. Clicking on a constellation displays its classical illustration, and a short description.

"Calling Starry Night just planetarium software doesn't do it justice," said Dr. Neil Commins, of the University of Maine. "It has the potential to change the way we all teach astronomy."

So much so that W.H. Freeman, publishers of leading astronomy textbooks, has formed an alliance with Sienna Software to bring a special student version of the software to all students using their introductory astronomy textbooks.
