Description
Based on the learnings acquired though the development and implementation of the Provincial Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) Prevention Initiative, the Provincial SBS Network identified a need for providing a structure that can lead to increased support for families and communities to ensure that children in Alberta grow up healthy and free from abuse or neglect. We have now evolved into the Alberta Child Abuse Prevention Network and have expanded our focus to include other areas of child maltreatment. The philosophy guiding the approach used in SBS prevention was to recognize the diverse capacities and needs of people parenting or caring for children and to reflect these in the strategies and resources developed. We also followed a community development approach which honoured the strengths of the communities and focused on responding to their needs in terms of information and resources. Applying this same philosophy and way of working to other aspects of child maltreatment, we can promote the creation and expansion of safe, healthy environments for children and youth. Our intention is to respond to the resource and information needs of service providers working with children and families by either identifying currently available, credible information or programs or, when necessary, creating the materials needed.
