Description
Meridian Industries was established in 1965 by Elmer Friesen near Rosenort, MB. He partnered with his brother Ron Friesen. Meridian Industries is the original manufacturer, and pioneered the idea of hopper bottom storage bins. The bins were named "Friesen" bins after the two owners. Meridian Industries' name derives from the original location of the company in Rosenort, MB being along the geographic longitudinal meridian. In the first years, bins were manufactured at the Friesen family farm and although the first few bins were for the Friesen's own use, soon many neighboring farmers placed their orders, with most bins required for feed storage. Demand started picking up and for a broader range of storage uses, so the brothers hired a few people to help manufacture "Friesen" bins. A full line of bins was developed for the storage of feed, seed, grain, fertilizer, and many other commodities and commercial products, all with the unique hopper bottom design. Meridian Industries primarily marketed their product line to the Manitoba, Eastern Saskatchewan, and Northern United States market area. In 1979, Wheatland Bins was started as a new company also providing hopper bottom storage bins and founded in Lethbridge, AB. Ron and Elmer Friesen were involved, however the primary owners were Richard Friesen (brother to Ron & Elmer), and Menno Kornleson. Wheatland Bins was a related company to Meridian Industries, but still a non-hostile competitor in spite of the common ownership...
