A small Pembroke-based company is exploring new energy solutions for Africa as a result of a partnership with a South African company. Glenergy Inc. designs and manufactures white LED (light emitting diode) systems - which consume as little as 8 watt of power - and specializes in identifying sensible applications of alternative energy.

What we do Solar lanterns and lighting systems are replacing kerosene lighting. Glenergy is helping this to happen, especially in East Africa, by providing and supporting a variety of quality solar lighting products, and importantly, by enabling microcredit for end users. We are currently active in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Why we do it There are huge numbers of people in East Africa who burn liquid fuels such as kerosene for light.

He is convinced that his altruistic goal of providing environmentally friendly, low-maintenance, long-life lighting is attainable, he adds. This is why the company has also focused on ensuring that assembling the lighting systems is very simple.

Conveying water from a source to a remote location with solar is often easier and cheaper than extending the power line. Solar-powered pumping systems can be sized to meet a wide variety of needs. Considerations include how far the water has to be lifted, the distance it has to travel through the delivery pipe (and the size of pipe), the type of pump used, and the amount of water required. The main components of a solar-powered pumping system are a solar panel and pump. Storage is generally required and can be implemented as either stored water or as batteries.

Watali meaning 'without', Maama Watali is the incarnation of Ottawa-based Susan. Susan supports orphaned or vulnerable girls in her home village of Luweero, providing them with opportunities and much needed cheer-leading. In coordination with the Rotary Club of Stitsville, Maama Watali's facility is providing another essential service as a community library. The library is lit and powered by a Glenergy solar system, so that reading does not have to stop come nightfall in Luweero.
