In 2004 we moved our residents out of the high-rise into a new six-story residence that meets all of the latest Ministry of Health standards. We now house a total of 254 residents in our two connected nursing home buildings, including a floor that offers special services for Asian residents, and which has been strongly supported by the Chinese Community. The Glebe Centre is dedicated to working with our residents, families, members, and clients in order to respond to individual physical, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual needs while encouraging and facilitating the maximum degree of independence possible. We care for those with dementia, as well as those who are cognitively intact but need personal assistance. The Ministry standards call for Resident Home Areas (RHA) to house a maximum of 32 residents. The RHAs have their own dining rooms, lounges and activity areas and are built around a beautifully landscaped courtyard. Every resident has a view of the Glebe neighbourhood or the courtyard.

The Glebe Centre is celebrating its 125 anniversary this year and the occasion was marked with a block party which was held last Saturday, June 4th. By all counts, the party was a great success. The Glebe Centre has a long and proud history and I would like to share with you some of our historical highlights. The Glebe Centre was founded in 1886, as the Protestant House of Refuge. According to a census which was conducted at about that time, the population of the City of Ottawa was approximately 27,000. Of this population, 396 men, aged 65 years and older, resided in the city. Although the numbers were relatively small, the city was lacking in charitable institutions for destitute older men and the Home was founded to meet this growing need.

The Glebe Centre is a charitable not-for-profit long-term care home that provides long term care; specialized care and community services to clients in the Ottawa community.

OCSC provides help for seniors and adults with physical disabilities living at home. It consists of 19 organizations mandated to provide this type of home-based community support. These agencies provide an efficient, accountable, consistent and coordinated range of community support services designed to meet the needs of individuals living in their community. The range of services offered by these agencies includes Meals on Wheels, Diners Club, Transportation, Friendly Home Visiting, Caregiver Support, Foot Care and Homemaking.

The name of the Home remained “The Protestant Home for the Aged" until 1967, when the name was changed to Abbotsford Haven. However, the Home continued as a residence for elderly men. In 1972, a new corporation was created called The Glebe Centre Incorporated through an amalgamation of Glebe Manor and Abbotsford Haven. In 1974 a new 12 storey, 195 bed home was opened on the land adjacent to the old home. The Home was now open to both male and female residents, with the majority being female. In 1975 Abbotsford Haven officially became Abbotsford House, and began its new role as an elderly persons centre. In 1993, with the passing of Bill 101, The Long Term Care Reform Act, the Home officially entered the realm of Health Care. Prior to 1993, and since the 1950’s, the Home operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Community and Social Services with roots in the welfare system. With the passing of the new act, the home became a long-term care home under the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care.
