The Haliburton Highlands is one of central Ontario's most popular tourist destinations. The Highlands are about two hours' drive north from Greater Toronto. In the spring, summer and fall, tourists flock to the region to enjoy swimming, canoeing and fishing in the clear Canadian Shield lakes, and exploring the pristine forests. While known as a popular summer cottage area, the Highlands are also very busy in the winter. Many snowmobiling clubs maintain well-groomed trails in the region all winter long. Ice fishing is also a favourite activity, and there is a downhill ski resort in the area as well. Haliburton is also well-known for its vibrant community of artisans and craftspeople. There is an annual tour of local artists' studios and many cottagers and residents take advantage of the local summer art school, operated by Sir Sandford Fleming College. The full-time population of the village of Haliburton is about 1200, with several thousand more residents living in surrounding areas. Haliburton has two grocery stores, a department store, two banks, a movie theatre, an LCBO store, and plenty of other shops and services.
