Fish Creek Provincial Park is a cherished natural area spanning the south part of the city of Calgary and providing endless opportunities for recreation, education and nature appreciation. The Friends of Fish Creek vision is a sustainable Fish Creek Provincial Park that improves the quality of life for present and future generations. To realize this vision, the Friends’ staff, volunteers and members remain focused on the mission of engaging the community through education and awareness to conserve a truly unique naturalized urban park.

Calgary is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada and since the early 1990s the city’s population has increased by close to half a million people. With such growth comes an increased demand on the park’s limited resources, infrastructure, and sensitive ecosystems. In 1992 a group of concerned citizens mobilized and began working with the Province of Alberta to take steps towards protecting Fish Creek Provincial Park. In 1994, the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society became a registered charity and developed a board of directors to oversee volunteer activities and program delivery in this park. Over the past 25 years, the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society has grown from a small group of local citizens concerned about the park they cherish, to an efficient and exemplary grassroots non-profit organization.

The Friends of Fish Creek does not receive regular financial support and relies on self-directed fundraising efforts, grants and donations. Although we benefit from close to 200 volunteers, over 770 members, and hundreds of community partnerships, the need to secure funding to support program delivery is a constant challenge.
