It was in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador that Fortis Inc. ("Fortis" or the "Corporation") had its beginnings with the formation of the St. John's Electric Company in 1885. That was only a few years after Thomas Edison introduced the first commercial use of electricity for lighting. The St. John's Electric Company would eventually evolve into Newfoundland Power Inc. ("Newfoundland Power"), the first wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis. The Corporation was established as the parent company of Newfoundland Power on December 29, 1987.

Central Hudson employees donated $300,000 to many community organizations in a variety of ways. The annual United Way Campaign, which has been led by employees for more than 70 consecutive years, raised almost $200,000 in donations from employees and retirees in 2013. During the Day of Caring , employee teams participated in building and ground improvement projects at the Woodstock Family House, a shelter for teens at risk in Ulster Country, and assembled and donated 400 school-supply kits for elementary and middle school children.
