Description
West Edmonton Seed Potatoes is operated by Jan and Nynke Vermue. The farm is located in a fertile valley near the rolling hills west of Edmonton, Alberta. Jan learned his potato production skills on his family farm and in earning an agricultural degree in Holland, the homeland of many of Northern Alberta's skilled potato producers. That European heritage is evident in rigorous standards of production and quality, and attention to detail that has been so important in the development of WESP as one of North America's finest potato production facilities. West Edmonton Seed Potatoes was founded in 1990 near Stony Plain, Alberta, about 30 miles west of Edmonton. In 2002, founders Hendrik and Thea Bakker sold the farm to their son-in-law, Jan Vermue, who now carries on the company's tradition of excellence. WESP grows only seed potatoes, from the nuclear minituber stage to Elite 2. West Edmonton Seed Potatoes is not large by many farmers' standards, covering about 180 acres, but each year it plants about 300,000 mini-tubers, spanning more than a dozen potato varieties, in carefully separated lots.
