Description

The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published a whitepaper on Corrosive Drywall or CDW (a.k.a. Chinese Drywall). Contaminated drywall imported from China has been found to emit sulfide vapors, impacting the air quality in tens of thousands of homes as well as in larger buildings. Most notable between the problem Chinese drywall and North American drywall are higher elemental sulfur content and the emission of gaseous sulfides (including hydrogen sulfide and various organosulfides). In most cases, CDW contains greater amounts of elemental strontium. CDW has been identified as having a higher organic content than other drywall. CDW seems to have originated from a Chinese mine where high-sulfur gypsum was mixed with oil shale. From approximately 2001 to 2007, substantial quantities of this product were shipped to ports in the eastern United States. Inspecting or testing for the presence of CDW has become an important part of due diligence when buying real estate in regions where the material has been imported, particularly in higher humidity climates.
