The R.C.M.P. Stables are open to the public at no charge. It was interesting to watch them practice for the Musical Ride. Constable Mark Dureau, the tour planner is preparing 125 shows with 45 stops, booked mostly for Manitoba and Ontario this summer. When they go on the road, 36 horses and 46 officers travel together. Canadians gets preference over international invitations. The horses are Thoroughbreds, bred for colour (black), size, uniformity and good temperament. This breeding program has been going on for over 50 years with the old horses auctioned to recoup some of the expenses.

Martha Washington is alive and well. It would be hard to find a lady more charming, gracious and interesting. Her favourite subject is George and she has a genuine concern for his health and happiness. During the Revolutionary War she traveled long distances to share his hardships. When she became the first, first lady, a position she did not enjoy, she managed their home with gracious dignity. Mary Wiseman has played this role for over 20 years and she knows Martha Washington as well as Martha knew herself.

The Temple of Inscriptions is the tallest and most prominent of Palenque’s buildings. The tall roof comb that crowned it is long gone. The inscriptions in Mayan hieroglyphs on the interior rear wall are the reason for its name, dedicating the temple in 692 A.D. to King Pakal. Ascend the 69 steps to the top for access to his tomb. This pyramid served as a crypt for a revered leader as well as a temple base.The Group of the Cross consists of four buildings dedicated to Pakal’s son, Chan-Balum: The Temple of the Sun, Temple 14, The Temple of the Cross and the Temple of the Foliated Cross.

Be sure to visit St. George’s-In-The-Pines Anglican Church (1889-1926) at 406 Buffalo Street. Services were held as early as 1885 and Lord and Lady Stanley, then Governor-General of Canada, laid the cornerstone in 1889. Distinguished guests include: The Duke and Duchess of York in 1897, the future Queen Mary in 1901, Edward, Prince of Wales in 1926, King George and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, and the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1954. For this article I have chosen some of my travel experiences. In each case, I have chosen an experience that enlarged my vision and now I would like to share these with you. A few years ago I was in Prague. We had gone up to the clock tower of the Old Town Square and as I looked out over the throngs of people below (Easter Weekend) I noticed a huge statue. In examining it up close it was dedicated to John Hus who was martyred in 1415. I had never heard of John Hus but my eldest daughter is a Medievalist and she lent me a book about him. I was hooked!
