About breed-rescue organizations Many breeders and fanciers have formed non-profit organizations to act as alternatives to animal shelters. Purebred rescue programs come in many shapes and sizes, from individual volunteers to large networks of fanciers. Some operate as a branch of a breed club, while others are independent. The vast majority are reputable and well run, but it’s important to do some research to ensure the program you choose is credible. Hallmarks of good organizations are: • neutering and spaying of all dogs before adoption; • careful screening of potential adopters to ensure dogs go to responsible owners; • full disclosure of a dog’s age and any medical or behaviour problems; • ongoing support to adopting owners • written adoption contracts with details of all expectations and requirements; and • a commitment to take back any dog that cannot remain in its adopting home.
